Functional Swords

Where is the true “balancing point” on an authentic Japanese Katana Sword?
In other words; I point my index finger straight out in front me pararlell to the ground, then lay the side of the blade on top of my finger. Then adjust the position of the blade until the entire sword balances out horizontally.
Where this point of balance be on the blade? I roughly balanced one out by taping counter-weights to the hilt and pommel until I could “windmill” The Sword without it wanting to fly out of my hand. That rough balance point was four inches from where the hilt/handle starts.
I’m wondering if it might have varied with the weilder’s personal preference? If so, I could finish out the handle in a way that allows adding/removing weights at the end. Similar to how you can on a pool cue.
In case wondering, this has been a hobby for twenty years. I find swords with reasonably good blades but crappy, phony looking handles. I throw those handles in the trash then build a functional and very solid weapon of my own design.
YEP! I know how to use them, too!
The hilt where it meets the blade should balance perfect where in western swords you will note a top heavy blade compared to the hilt.
SO where the hilt and the blade meet, just as with a knife, check there for proper balance.
HI BO….I know who it is…no one in here. A certain user in the top ten has gone to every question i answer to put a thumbs down, either BOZ or Chris. not sure but its one of em. I don worry about it, a person can still know a good answer even with it. I never vote bad unless they are swearing or something. Even the last guy here got two thumbs down i dont know why. stupid!

Swords and Swordsmen $48.91 This magnificent book tells the story of the evolution of swords, how they were made, how they were used, and the people that used them. It doesn’t claim to give comprehensive coverage but instead takes certain surviving examples as landmarks on a fascinating journey through the history of swords. Each is selected because it can be linked to a specific individual, thus telling their story too and giving a human interest. So the journey starts with the sword of Tutankhamun and ends with the swords of J E B Stuart and George Custer. Along the way we take in Henry V, Cromwell and Uesugi Kenshin, and there is the most detailed discussion you’ll find anywhere of all of George Washington’s swords. The chapters on these specific swords and swordsmen are alternated with more general chapters on the changing technical developments and fashions in swords and their use. The reader’s guide on this historical tour is Mike Loades. Mike has been handling swords most of his life, as a fight arranger, stuntman and historical weapons expert for TV and stage. He considers the sword as a functional weapon, work of art, fashion statement and cultural icon. As much as his profound knowledge of the subject, it is his life-long passion for swords that comes through on every page. His fascinating text is supported by a lavish wealth of images, many previously unpublished and taken specifically for this book. |
