Martial Arts Training Swords

What rank in Aikido can one start BO-staff, Sword training, or taijutsu?

Im looking into doing Martial Arts again, and there’s an aikido studio about 10 minutes from my house. I researched the art and saw that part of aikido training is BO-staff (aiki-jo), Sword (Aiki-ken), and Taijutsu. Does someone have to be a certain kyu (i believe thats the word for rank) in order to do any of those techniques?

Also, is taijutsu even involved in aikido??

It depends on the instructor/dojo/organization. Some dojos use suburi (solo cutting exercises) with either bokken or jo (no, you won’t use a bo in aikido) as part of regular warm-ups, others have special weapon classes. Some instructors feel that weapon training, especially aiki-ken, should be introduced as early as possible, since most basic movement and techniques in aikido is derived from sword-techniques; while other may limit weapon training to those above, say, 2nd kyu.

Taijutsu literally means body-arts/techniques, and is nowadays usually used to refer to empty-handed techniques; so yes, taijutsu is a big part of aikido.

The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe

The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe

$60.54

Mounted encounters by armored knights locked in desperate hand-to-hand combat, stabbing and wrestling in tavern brawls, deceits and brutalities in street affrays, balletic homicide on the dueling field — these were the martial arts of Renaissance Europe. In this extensively illustrated book Sydney Anglo, a leading historian of the Renaissance and its symbolism, provides the first complete study of the martial arts from the late fifteenth to the late seventeenth century. He explains the significance of martial arts in Renaissance education and everyday life and offers a full account of the social implications of one-to-one combat training. Like the martial arts of Eastern societies, ritualized combat in the West was linked to contemporary social and scientific concerns, Anglo shows. During the Renaissance, physical exercise was regarded as central to the education of knights and gentlemen. Soldiers wielded a variety of weapons on the battlefield, and it was normal for civilians to carry swords and know how to use them. In schools across the continent, professional masters-of-arms taught the skills necessary to survive in a society where violence was endemic and life cheap. Anglo draws on a wealth of evidence — from detailed treatises and sketches by jobbing artists to magnificent images by Durer and Cranach and descriptions of real combat, weapons and armor -to reconstruct and illustrate the arts taught by these ancient masters-at-arms.

The Science of Martial Arts Training

The Science of Martial Arts Training

$16.46

Traditionally, martial arts emphasize the process of training over the expected end result. However, author Charles Staley asserts that even for those whom the martial arts represents a non-sporting activity, proper training methodologies should be adhered to in the interest of safety and to optimize the satisfaction and enjoyment that one should derive from athletic training. This book includes in-depth discussions on such topics as skills training, strength development, flexibility, speed and quickness training, tournament strategy, motivation, nutrition, restoration, and many others. The end result of the training process is a reflection of the synergistic effect of all the components in the training plan.

 Bokken

Bokken

$52.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A bokken (bok(u), “wood”, and ken, “sword”) (or commonly as bokutō in Japan), is a Japanese wooden sword used for training, usually the size and shape of a katana, but sometimes shaped like other swords, such as the wakizashi and tantō. Some ornamental bokken are decorated with mother-of-pearl work and elaborate carvings. Bokutō should not be confused with shinai, a sword made of bamboo that is used for practice in kendo. The bokken is used as an inexpensive and safe substitute for a real sword in several martial arts such as kendo, aikido and kenjutsu. In 2003, the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF) introduced a type of practice using bokken. Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho is a set of basic exercises using a bokuto. This form of practice, is intended primarily for kendoka up to ni-dan (2), but is very useful for all kendo students.

Chinese Martial Arts Training Manuals: A Historical Survey

Chinese Martial Arts Training Manuals: A Historical Survey

$21.95

Secret training manuals, magic swords, and flying kung fu masters—these are staples of Chinese martial arts movies and novels, but only secret manuals have a basis in reality. Chinese martial arts masters of the past did indeed write such works, along with manuals for the general public. This collection introduces Western readers to the rich and diverse tradition of these influential texts, rarely available to the English-speaking reader. Authors Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo, who coauthor a regular column for Classical Fighting Arts magazine, showcase illustrated manuals from the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and the Republican period. Aimed at fans, students, and practitioners, the book explains the principles, techniques, and forms of each system while also placing them in the wider cultural context of Chinese martial arts. Individual chapters cover the history of the manuals, Taiwanese martial arts, the lives and livelihoods of the masters, the Imperial military exams, the significance of the Shaolin Temple, and more. Featuring a wealth of rare photographs of great masters as well as original drawings depicting the intended forms of each discipline, this book offers a multifaceted portrait of Chinese martial arts and their place in Chinese culture.
