Sword Ban in the UK?
Does anyone know if the British Government are trying to ban the sale, ownership and import of Samurai Swords? Just read a post on another marial arts board dated march this year but there is no more information. This is really sad for martial artists who practice iaido. But i do think they should only be sold to licenced practictioners. Any info or your views welcome.
It saddens me that true artists will suffer it the ban gets passed by the courts. I just cant see how one can practice cutting forms without one? ![]()
A little more research reveals that its just replicas and not the real practice swords that will be banned! The Iaido and kendo associations would be still be allowed to practice! Seems like another farce again! Better to train the police in muto dori!
Yeah I heard this. I do believe that the licenced Martial Artists should be able to practice. I hate the fact that you can go iinto a newsagents and pick up a replica of any bladed article (just try shopping down near the bus station in a city centre (leeds)) When buying a weapon to trian with I believe that you should hold a seperate licence with a signiture from your sensei (if you do not hold an instructors licence) to approve you buying such a weapon.
unfortunatly an instructor of mine lent his weapon to a student for a demonstration. the students house was broken into and It was stolen, along with his car!
….Karma….
but getting back to the subject, do you have satalite TV? a while back,on the channel Bravo, to “celebrate” the release of “blade:the series” you won a pair of sunglasses… and a replica sword…the fact they called it a “samurai” sword was very sad too…
I welcome the ban on replica and the real Weapons to the general public, I really do. But for dedicated Martial Artists I believe we should be able to access them, however there must be strict processes in place. When I buy my weapons I am asked to show identification to prove that im a practicing student. I also need to show that I’m the person in my licence book by showing either a driving license or passport. I also need to be 18 to buy a weapon.
I also needed to add this in response to anthother answer. YES SWORDS CAN BE CONCEALED EASILY! a woman five houses away from me was attacked with a “samurai” sword (i refuse to refer to it as a samurai sword unless its been made for that purpose or used by such a person) and her daughter was also attacked. the woman died on scene as she lay there bleeding to death. what was more disturbing is the suspect then got on a bus in to the town centre and attacked a bystander who was obviously shocked at a guy covered in blood and he then got onto ANOTHER bus and was arrested when he got off… so yes, people do get attacked by Swords And yes they can conceal them.
